Paste the original text on the left and the new text on the right.

Paste two texts above and the differences appear here.

This compares only the two texts on this page. It is a diff checker, not a plagiarism checker: it does not search the web or any database.

How to use the text compare tool

  1. Paste the original text in Original text and the new version in Changed text, or press Try an example.
  2. The differences appear below as you type: red lines were removed, green lines were added, and in a changed line the words that changed are marked.
  3. Switch between Side by side and One column. Tick Ignore case or Ignore spaces to skip differences that do not matter, and Hide unchanged lines to see only the changes in a long text.
  4. The summary shows how many lines are the same, changed, added and removed, and the share of lines the two texts have in common.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you paste or type is uploaded or saved.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a plagiarism checker?

No. This text compare tool only compares the two texts you paste into it, line by line. It does not search the web, books or any database, so it cannot tell you whether a text was copied from somewhere else. Use it to see what changed between two drafts, to check two copies of a document or a list are the same, or to find the lines two texts share.

How does the text compare tool find the differences?

It uses the Myers diff algorithm, the same approach Git uses for git diff. It finds the smallest set of added and removed lines that turns the original into the changed text, so as many lines as possible stay matched. When a removed line and an added line sit in the same place, they are shown as one changed line, and a second word-by-word comparison marks exactly what changed in it.

Can I compare code, and are my texts uploaded?

Yes, it works with any plain text: code, JSON, CSV, config files, essays and lists. Turn on Ignore spaces to skip indentation changes. Both texts are compared in your browser with JavaScript; nothing is uploaded or saved, so it is safe for private documents and work code.
