How to choose a laptop for programming in 2026

Buy 16GB RAM, an H-series or Core Ultra CPU, a 512GB NVMe SSD and a screen of at least 300 nits. Skip the graphics card unless you edit video or train AI models. Below: how to read every line of a laptop listing, the tricks sellers use, and what each budget really buys in India.

cpu: "H-series", // or Core Ultra
  ssd: "512GB NVMe",
  screen: "300+ nits", // 16:10 ideal
  gpu: null, // unless ML/video

The 30-second answer

If you write code, spend your money in this order: RAM first, then the CPU class, then the SSD, then the screen. Everything else is a nice-to-have.

  1. 116GB RAMThe most common bottleneck. Docker, VS Code and Chrome fill 8GB.
  2. 2H-series or Core Ultra CPUFaster builds and test runs. Read the last letter.
  3. 3512GB NVMe SSDnode_modules and Docker images eat space fast.
  4. 4300-nit, 16:10 screenYou will stare at it for 8 hours.
  5. 5Everything elseWeight, ports, backlight, battery.

2026 is not a normal year. A global shortage of DRAM (the RAM chips) pushed laptop prices in India up 10–20% compared with 2025. A fair price this year means cheaper than the last 3 months, not cheaper than the MRP badge. Check price history before you trust a discount.

Which buyer are you?

Your daily work decides the spec, not the price tag. Find your row and you already know 80% of what to buy.

CPU: the letter at the end tells the truth

The suffix letter after the model number tells you the power class. Programmers want H; U is for battery and portability. A Core i5-13420H and a Core i5-1335U can look identical on a listing and perform very differently.

How much power each chip class may draw

Watts. More power = faster under sustained load, less battery.
Laptop CPU power classes by suffix letter U: 15 to 28 watts. P: 28 watts. H: 45 watts. HX: 55 watts and above. V (Lunar Lake): about 17 watts base with memory on the chip. 0W15W30W45W60WU15–28WThin, light, long battery. Students, travel.P28WMiddle ground. Light development.H45WFast, needs a fan. Programmers, editors.HX55W+Desktop class. ML, 3D, gaming.V~17WLunar Lake: RAM inside the chip, big battery.
U = 15–28W · P = 28W · H = 45W · HX = 55W+ · V (Core Ultra 200V) ≈ 17W base. Intel dropped "P" after 13th gen; Core Ultra uses U, H and V.

Same laptop, one letter apart

The clearest proof: Dell sells the same body twice. Same brand, weight, RAM and SSD. Only the CPU letter changes.

₹82,490

Prices seen on Amazon on 10 Oct 2026. The extra ₹9,500 buys a 45W chip instead of a 15–28W one: faster builds and Docker, a little less battery.

Intel naming trap: "Core Ultra 5 125H / 225H / 226V" are the new chips with an NPU and Arc graphics. Plain "Core 5 120U", "Core 3 100U", "Core 5 210H", "Core 7 240H", without the word Ultra, are re-badged 13th-gen chips. They are fine, but the "AI PC" sticker next to them is not the same thing.

Decode an AMD chip in 5 seconds

In AMD's 2023+ laptop names, the third digit is the architecture. A 2 there means Zen 2, a design from 2020. That is how a Ryzen 5 7520U gets sold in 2026 as a "7-series" chip.

Ryzen

Avoid for development. Zen 2 from 2020: 4 cores, soldered LPDDR5 RAM, weak Radeon 610M graphics.

Good AMD chips to look for

  • Ryzen 5 7430U / 7530U Zen 3, 6 cores
  • 7535HS / 7735HS Zen 3+
  • 8645HS / 8845HS Zen 4
  • Ryzen AI 300 series Zen 5
  • Ryzen 7 260 / 170 re-badged Zen 4: decent, not new

Avoid in 2026

  • Ryzen 5 7520U Zen 2, 4 cores, soldered RAM
  • Ryzen 3 3200U / Ryzen 5 3500U 2019 chips, still on sale
  • Celeron / Pentium N-series
  • Anything with eMMC storage
  • Android "laptops" like Primebook

The 7520U scores about 5,149 in Cinebench R23 multi-core, barely above an Intel Core i3-1215U (Notebookcheck). TechEnclave users put it simply: "5500U is better than 7520U."

Do you need a graphics card?

For web, app and backend development: no. Spend that money on RAM and a better screen. You need an NVIDIA card only if you edit video or learn AI/ML, because those tools are built on CUDA.

Do you edit video or train AI models?
No

Integrated GPU is enough

Intel Arc (Core Ultra) or AMD Radeon 780M handle VS Code, Docker, 1080p video and Netflix. A dGPU only costs money and battery.

Yes

NVIDIA RTX, 6GB VRAM+

PyTorch, TensorFlow, Stable Diffusion, DaVinci Resolve and Premiere's GPU encoder are written for CUDA. AMD and Intel laptop GPUs have weaker support.

RAM: how much, and the soldered trap

16GB is the developer minimum. And check the RAM type: LPDDR5 / LPDDR5X is soldered and can never be upgraded, while DDR5 marked "upgradeable" sits in a slot you can fill later.

Soldered vs slot: what you are buying

You cannot see this in a photo. The RAM type word tells you.
Soldered RAM: chips fixed on the motherboard CPU fixed forever

Soldered (LPDDR5 / LPDDR5X)

Chips fixed on the board. All MacBooks, Galaxy Books, Lunar Lake "V" chips, Snapdragon X and Ryzen 7520U laptops. Fast, but the size you buy is the size you keep.

SO-DIMM RAM: a removable stick in a slot CPU empty slot: add later

Don't trust Amazon's tech table alone. It is auto-filled and often wrong: the soldered Lenovo above shows "RAM Memory Slot Total Count: 1", but Lenovo's own spec sheet for the 7520U model says "soldered, no SODIMM slot, not upgradable". Trust the RAM type word in the title, then confirm on the brand's spec page (Lenovo PSREF, HP QuickSpecs, Dell or ASUS spec pages).

Single vs dual channel: why two sticks beat one

The CPU talks to RAM over two "roads" called channels. One stick uses one road; two sticks use both, which doubles memory bandwidth. For DDR5-5600 that is about 45 GB/s with one stick and 90 GB/s with two.

Watch the traffic

Memory channels between the CPU and RAM With one stick only channel A carries data, about 45 GB per second for DDR5-5600. With two sticks channels A and B both carry data, about 90 GB per second. CPU memory controller Channel A Channel B Stick 1 Stick 2 ≈ 45 GB/s · single channel
1 stick (single)45 GB/s
2 sticks (dual)90 GB/s
DDR5-5600 peak bandwidth: ≈45 GB/s on one channel, ≈90 GB/s on two. Everyday coding barely notices; the integrated GPU, which borrows system RAM, can lose a third or more of its performance.
2×8GB beats 1×16GB

Same 16GB total, double the speed today. But in a 2-slot laptop, 1×16GB is fine if you will add a matching 16GB stick later (32GB dual channel).

Soldered is not single channel

LPDDR5X is wired across all channels at the factory, so it is fast. Its only problem is that it can never grow.

1 slot = replace, not add

With one slot you pull out the 8GB stick and fit a bigger one. You stay single channel, and the old stick becomes spare.

Building a desktop? Slots 2 and 4, never 1 and 2

Four slots, but still only two channels.

Wrong: slots 1 + 2

A1 A2 B1 B2

Both sticks on channel A: single channel, half speed.

Right: slots 2 + 4 (A2 + B2)

A1 A2 B1 B2

One stick per channel: dual channel. The manual says so too.

Slots read A1, A2, B1, B2 from left to right on most boards. Filling the far slot of each channel first keeps the signal clean.

How to find a laptop's real maximum RAM

  1. The maker's spec page (best). Search "<exact model code> PSREF" (Lenovo), "QuickSpecs" (HP) or the service manual (Dell). Look for the Memory row.
  2. The CPU's own limit. Intel ARK or AMD's product page shows the ceiling. The laptop can be lower, never higher.
  3. Memory-vendor tools. Crucial Advisor and Kingston's configurator list tested sticks for thousands of models.
  4. On the laptop. Task Manager → Performance → Memory shows "Slots used: 1 of 2" and "Form factor: SODIMM".
  5. Ignore Amazon's "Maximum Size" field. It often just repeats the installed RAM.

Before you buy a RAM stick, check four things: DDR4 or DDR5 (they don't fit each other's slots) · speed (the laptop runs at the slower one) · SO-DIMM for laptops, not desktop DIMM · how many slots, so you know whether you are adding or replacing.

Storage: eMMC vs HDD vs SATA vs NVMe

Buy a 512GB NVMe SSD at minimum. NVMe Gen4 is what most ₹60k+ laptops ship, and it is roughly 28 times faster than the eMMC storage in cheap Chromebooks.

Sequential read speed

Display: the spec sheet lies by omission

"FHD IPS" tells you nothing about brightness or colour. Look for 300+ nits and, for photo or video work, 100% sRGB. "45% NTSC" is roughly 62–65% sRGB: washed-out colour, even on popular developer laptops.

Resolution1920×1200 (16:10) shows more lines of code than 1920×1080. 2.5K/2.8K OLED is a luxury that costs battery.
Refresh60Hz is fine for coding. 120/144Hz matters for gaming.

Battery, ports, keyboard and weight

Judge battery by watt-hours (Wh), not "up to 10 hours". 40Wh gives 3–4 real hours; 50–60Wh is decent; 70Wh+ lasts all day.

Decent. Enough for most of a work session away from the charger.

USB-C with PDCharges from a small 65W charger. Many budget laptops have data-only USB-C: look for "PD" or "charging".
Thunderbolt 4 / USB4One cable to a dock, monitor or eGPU. Rare under ₹60k.
Wi-Fi 6 / 6ESome budget models still ship Wi-Fi 5.
Backlit keyboardThe first thing cut under ₹45k. Confirm it if you code at night.
Weight14" at 1.3–1.4kg is the daily-carry sweet spot. 15.6" at 1.6–1.8kg is a desk laptop.

Windows licence, Office and warranty

"Windows 11 Home" means a genuine licence is included (worth about ₹10,000). "DOS / No OS" does not. Some offline dealers install pirated Windows on a DOS unit and charge the Windows price.

Check activation

Settings → Activation should say "Windows is activated with a digital licence".

Onsite vs carry-in

Onsite (Dell, Lenovo, HP Smartchoice) sends an engineer home. Carry-in means you visit the service centre. ADP covers drops and liquid.

Check the start date

Old stock can show a warranty start months before you bought it. Check the serial on the brand site on day 1 and fix it with your invoice.

How sellers fool you (with evidence)

The two biggest tricks are an inflated MRP and a price raised just before the sale. Both make a normal price look like a discount.

Online or offline: where to actually buy

Online is usually cheaper for the same series; offline wins on store-only EMI offers, price matching and inspecting the unit before you pay. In Zoutons' September 2026 comparison, Amazon was cheaper than Croma on the IdeaPad Slim 3 series by ₹9,645.

When offline wins

  • Store-only bank EMI discounts
  • Counters that match a competitor screenshot for the exact model number
  • No-cost EMI without a credit card
  • Inspect the unit; instant replacement if it is dead on arrival

How to negotiate

  1. Show the online listing with the model number and the final price after the card offer.
  2. Ask: "Match this on the invoice, or add free ADP or extended warranty."
  3. Go on a weekday evening near month-end.
  4. Always take a GST invoice with your name, serial and model. Freelancers can claim the 18% GST input credit.

Returns: Amazon India is largely replacement-only for laptops; Flipkart offers 7-day replacement for defects.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM do I need for programming in 2026?

16GB is the minimum for development. It runs VS Code, a browser with many tabs, Docker and a database together. 8GB is for casual use only, and 32GB is for machine learning, virtual machines and heavy video editing.

Is the Ryzen 5 7520U good for programming?

No. In AMD's 2023 naming the third digit is the architecture, and the 2 in 7520U means Zen 2, a 2020-era design with 4 cores and soldered RAM. Look for a 3 or higher in that position, such as the Ryzen 5 7430U, 7535HS or 8845HS.

H or U processor: which is better for coding?

H-series chips (45W) build, compile and run containers faster and suit programmers. U-series chips (15–28W) are slower under load but run cooler and last longer on battery, which suits students and casual users.

Do I need a graphics card for programming?

Not for web, app or backend development. An integrated GPU handles VS Code, Docker and video playback. Buy an NVIDIA RTX card with at least 6GB of VRAM only if you edit video or learn AI and ML, because those tools are built on CUDA.

Can I upgrade RAM on a laptop with LPDDR5?

No. LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X are soldered to the motherboard and can never be upgraded. Plain DDR4 or DDR5 marked "upgradeable" or "SO-DIMM" usually sits in a slot you can upgrade later.

Is a 512GB SSD enough for a developer?

Yes, 512GB NVMe is the practical minimum. node_modules folders, Docker images and a couple of virtual machines fill 200GB quickly. A spare M.2 slot lets you add more storage later.

MacBook or Windows laptop for programming?

A MacBook Air with 16GB is the default premium choice for web development: long battery life, a Unix terminal and mature Docker support. Choose Windows if you need an NVIDIA GPU for CUDA, gaming, upgradeable RAM or a lower budget.
